If a stiff, awkward gathering suddenly brightens up, nine times out of ten it's because you did something delightfully out of pocket. You toss out a witty suggestion, or show just a flicker of curiosity about the thing you've been told not to do. If someone snorts and says "Oh, come on — why are you like this!", that's a wildly successful day.
